A Little About Me

Coach Vivian Gibson (she/they)

I got my degree in psychology from California Lutheran University in 2017 and my big life goal at the time was to get licensed to be a therapist. But as life flowed after graduation, I discovered coaching. And more than that, I discovered that therapy and coaching are two sides of the same coin. While therapy deals with a person’s past and how it affects their present, coaching takes a person in their present and draws a path for them to their future. And I find the future to be very exciting.

I left my job at a mental health employee assistance program and joined a company that provided job coaching for individuals with developmental disabilities. And I loved working with my group. Discovering how their unique personalities led them to the decisions they wanted to make with their lives, and piecing together the puzzle of how to get them to where they wanted to be.

In the quarantine of 2020, I started playing with the idea of becoming a certified coach. I wrote out a pros and cons list about staying with my old job or beginning something new. I researched ICF accredited programs all across the United States, looking for something that fit me best as a person and as a potential coach. I finally landed on the Academy of Creative Coaching, based out of Georgia, three whole time zones away from my home in California. But their foundation in creative problem solving based on each individual client spoke to me, reminding me of how incredibly diverse my job coaching clients were and how each required something different and tailored to them to set them up for success.

As I move along my journey towards ICF certification, I look back on the decisions I made over my career to get me to this point. And I think, “Man. This would have been easier if I’d had someone to help me plan this out.” And this is when I figured out exactly what I want to be doing with my business, with my education:

My passion is being that voice of support and curiosity for people going through significant transitions in their lives.

I find the future to be very exciting. And transitions are the building blocks of the future, whether those transitions are related to academia, career, relationships, or any other aspect of life. My goal in my career as a coach is to help my clients get in the driver’s seat of their lives and make these important decisions about the roadmap of their next big life transitions.
